Woke up in the morning, had the urge to hope on my motorcycle and ride, what better? get the equipment together and pop for a short ride in the district of Attika.
The souther part of Attiki holds a lot of nice places the sun setting falls always within the vicinity of the camera and I knew I could probably experience some nice sunsets.
The sky was partially clouded and that meant that I could probably combine my short ride with a photographic opportunity, packed my stuff and headed towards Sounio and Saronida.
After slowly checking places where I could possibly enjoy a nice sunset without the cement madness of the rest of Athens I managed to find a little nice opening on the cape, there was a small parking lot but the motorcycle could easily fit. Pulled over and took my gear (thats a bit of tiresome since I always need to carry helmets, gloves and jackets with me) and I started descending the cliff.
I was a bit early so I had around 2 hours of waiting for the sun to start setting and catch up with the light I wanted to have, I put my equipment away and just waited starring at the calmness of the surroundings only the sea and the breeze, ipod playing my favorite tunes and thoughts overwhelming my mind.
Although I initially used a GND, I decided to go for a manual blend of 2 exposures (EXIF for the exposure on the dark rocks).
First exposure for the foreground was at 1.3 sec at f/16 and the second exposure for the sky was at 0.5sec at f/16

Actually, maybe a square crop losing a little from the left, and more from the right would look good

Could try that, the square struggles me still since I feel it's a bit difficult in its approach (I believe it's all about experimenting! :) ).

I really like this mate, I think it's one of your best.
I've seen that a few people have said "too much rock" but I don't agree, I like it the way it is. I like shots which break formulas, and this does. The light on the rock, and the texture the light brings out, are for me the focus of the shot. The sunset is given a supporting role, which again, I think is important. In so many shots like this, the sunset is the prime focus and everything else is secondary....but here I like the fact that you've made it all about the rock.
As I said, one of your best in my opinion

Thanks Andy!
Well I was there trying to figure how to frame it, on the left there is just open water which I also found a bit boring and usual as composition, I enjoyed the rock patterns (actually I have collected on time some rock pattern shots, sometime I will be posting them as well) and believed with all those lines, shadows and the small pool could add a bit more drama to the composition.
After reviewing it a few times I might agree a tad about the rock feeling heavy, formulas surely are there to be broken, but first I need to get used and comfy with formulas (me believes :D )
On the other hand including more sky was out of the question since the clouds where up to that level, I would have a bit more boring on the sky, moving left, not easy was nearly over the water the rock was actually quite big and impressive.
I have 2 more captures from that specific spot, one vertical which might work a bit better and a different a few minutes later when the sun was completely gone that was taken from a different rock which also is appealing! :)
Thank you Andy once again you are helpful! :)

I'm liking the the sky, but the compo to me doesn't exactly feel right. It feels too heavy on the right, too much rocks in my opinion... What about getting lower and closer the to water in portrait orientation? Would cut out the chunk of rock which to me is unnecessary.

Unusual composition with that impressive huge rock taking up most of the picture. Lovely shutter speed for the sea - and a great sky. All in all a fantastic image. And the icing on the cake is you tell everybody how you did it :)
